sixty seconds with shirls: genetics

one 4 year old picks up something extraordinary about her teacher and fellow classmate tony -

4 year old: hey shireen! you and tony are the only people with black hair in the room.
shirls: that’s very true. tony and i have the same colour hair.
tony: no!
shirls: yes we do. you have black hair, and i have black hair. it’s the same.
tony: no it's not! my hair is the same colour as my mummy.
shirls: actually tony, your mum's hair is a different colour, but we have the same hair colour.
tony: no!! my hair is the same as my mummy's. she makes the babies! we have the same hair colour!
shirls: [decides to let things rest]
tony: [thinks for a moment] mummy's hair IS the same as mine, but she colours it in!

never, but never, contradict a kid on their opinion of their own appearance.

actually, modify that: never contradict anyone on their opinion of their own appearance. they won't believe you and they won't thank you.

that's what i've learned.
